Wednesdays: 4:30 – 7:00 pm
CRN: 11684 – SENG 396 – 01
“Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint on the broken glass.”–Anton Chekhov
In this course, we approach writing fiction as a craft—an artistic discipline where budding craftspeople acquire skills developed overtime through careful, contemplative practice. As such, this is a developmental course where students are encouraged to explore their writing skills in creative ways while being introduced to the basics of form and theory associated with short fiction. This course is designed to improve creative and critical faculties by exposing students to a variety of literature (poetry, short fiction, prose poetry, and other hybrid work) and by encouraging them to attempt different styles in their writing.
